Tioman Island lies off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, in the South China Sea. It’s a nature reserve, ringed by beaches. The area is known for its dive sites, which have corals, sea fans and sea sponges, as well as shipwrecks. The island is covered in tropical rainforests, home to butterflies, lizards and monkeys. On the east coast, the Juara Turtle Project is a hatchery that protects and studies sea turtles.
The best time to visit Tioman Island is the dry season which starts from May to September. The water is as clear is it gets this time – perfect for exploring the underwater world! Thus, it comes as no surprise that this is also the busiest period for resorts and ferry services! Monsoon season isn’t all that bad though.
To reach Pulau Tioman, you can travel by land, sea, or air. The two main gateways to the island are Mersing and Tanjung Gemok, where you can catch a ferry. Alternatively, you can take a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Pulau Tioman.
Bluewater Ferry offers daily trips from Mersing Jetty and Tanjung Gemok Jetty to various villages on Tioman Island, such as Tekek, Salang, Air Batang, Genting, Paya and Nipah. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the weather and tide conditions.
